Real China - Yangling & Xian

Coz all the previous posts were in English its now time to write in German.;)

Von 30. November bis 4. Dezember besuchten wir unserer Studienkollegin in Yangling - Shaanxi Provinz. Dieses verschlafene Dorf liegt etwa 90 km westlich von Xian und verdankt seiner "fortschritlichen" Entwicklung der Universität.

Der Unterschied zu Hong Kong ist extrem. In Yangling wird man als Ausländer regelrecht angestarrt, naja bis auf unserer Studienkollegin Susi sind dort keine Ausländer. Ein weiterer großer Unterschied liegt in den dortigen Preisen. Für eine Mahlzeit zahlt man rund 0,5 bis 1 EUR, wobei letzterer Preis schon für ein sehr gutes Menü verlangt wird. Auch maßgeschneiderte Anzüge sind sehr sehr billig - rund 35 EUR pro Stück. ;)

In Xian sind sehr viele kulturelle Sehenswürdigkeiten, so besichtigten wir unter anderem die welt-berühmte Terrakota Armee, den Famen Temple uvm.

Über diese faszinierende Gegend könnte noch viel viel mehr gesagt und geschrieben werde, aber ich bin der Meinung, dass die Fotos den besten Eindruck vermitteln.

Wandern / hiking - 06.11.05

Today - Manni a Tyrolean guy who has been living here in HK for ten years invited me for hiking near sai kung.
Clemens joined me and we had to get up 7 in the morning. We met at Mong Kok and then went to Sai Kung. From there we took a taxi into a national park.
After a walk of about half an hour we reached the first amazing beach were many campers stayed overnight. All the areas couldn´t be reached by car as no road exists.
From this beach we went to a place which is very hidden and not in a map - just a few mountain climbers were there. We enjoyed swimming in a small river and jumped a lot.

Then we went to the best beach in Hong Kong. Therefore you should have a look at the pictures because you won´t believe it that Hong Kong can offer such places - AMAZING is the word to descirbe this.

At about 5 p.m. we finished our trip and we had great seafood dinner in sai kung.

PS: Manni thanks a lot for taking us to those great places - it was by far one of the best days so far in HK for me!!!

Austrian Heurigen

On November 4th the Austro Cham organized the Heurigen 2005. This event was hold at the front lawn of "The Verandah" in Repulse Bay. The restaurant is right above the famous feng shui building with the whole in it. The chef of the restaurand is an Austrian and so the food was really good.
Much of the food and all the drinks (wine, beer, mineral water) was imported from Austria. Two musicians were flown in for that event.

Austrian National Day

The Austrian consulate celebrated on November 1st the Austrian National Day at the Shangri-la Hotel in Hong Kong.
An Austrian delegation under national congress president Dr. Andreas Kohl was supposed to join this event but the "big boss" himself didn´t even show up.

The event was held in the ballroom of the mentioned hotel. Very nice place. The best part was the great Austrian food and the excellent wine.

After the event was over many people went on to Lang Kwai Fong and we had some good time there as well.

Austrians visiting HK

The past two days my schoolmates Theresa & Julia visited Hong Kong. Also Theresa´s dad - Erwin and his friend Thomas where here.
On Saturday we went out in Lang Kwai Fong which was really crowded because of Halloween.

Today we went to Repulse Bay which is the complete opposite to Kowloon or Central. It´s very quiet there and the beach seems really clean - but therefore you should have a look at the pics. At this nice place we also saw the famous building with the hole in it. The hole is a feng shui things so that the bad ghosts can flow trough the house.
Coming Friday at the buildings restaurant there will be the Austrian heurigen.

After Repulse Bay we went to the peak which was great and afterwards we took the longest escalators in the world to Soho were we had dinner.

Oktoberfest

On Thursday, October 27th many Austrians met at the Marco Polo (formerly known as Hong Kong Hotel) in order to celebrate the Austrian national day (which was on October 26th) at the Oktoberfest which was held at the Marco Polo.
At the hotel they put up a tent & "Bierbänke" at the parking deck - the view was unbelievable.
Was a great time and I met many Austrians. And another good think was that I had a "Schweinshaxn" for dinner. Was really good.

Beijing/Peking & Philippines

It seems that my last entry was quiet a while ago.

But I had not much time since I went to the Philippines (Cebu) and to the chinese capital - Beijing.

We had a great time in Cebu - spent seven days there - was a very relaxing "Badeurlaub".

The past four days we spent in Beijing - it´s one of the most fascinating city I have seen so far - all the cultural background and the fast development of the city.
The most fascinating part of our China trip was by far the great wall. Unbelievable how they built the wall back then.

We also had a great time in Hong Kong - visited the biggest sitting buddha statue in the world, etc.

International Day @ PolyU Student Hall

Today exchange students from 25 countries all over the world presented their home country at the PolyU Student Hall to their fellow student. Many countries presented some traditional food & drinks. Also some countries did some performance - e.g. Finish showed how a Finish sauna functions, Germans were singing their national anthem, Koreans were playing the drums,...;

At the PolyU student hall there life total about 3,000 students and 200 of them are exchange students. The show was pretty crowded.

Such an event is a very good opportunity to bring your country and culture closer to your fellow students - therefore we Austrians prepared quiet good for that event: we bought "Speck and Salami" at a butcher´s here in HK (food was imported from Austria); we had some "Wiener Manner Schnitten". But not enough - when you offer some food people wish some drinks as well - therefore we were able to catch the Austrian Energy Drink company RED BULL as a sponsor for our booth.
At our stand we were combining modern spirit with tradition, in other words Red Bull with bacon and "Schuachblattln" (a traditional Austrian dance where you were Lederhosen). So the 8 Austrian boys at PolyU were performing on stage the so called "Schuachblattl" dance.

Ewald´s birthday

Ewald, our friend from the FHS Steyr turned 35!! today. Therefore a surprise party was prepared for him. It started in the afternoon with a birthday cake and then a so called "Schnitzljagd" started. Ewald only got a Hong Kong map with 10 marked points on it. His task was to lead us to every stop. At each stop he had to do some exercises - e.g. sell toilet paper in order to get some money for a drink or do some sports exercise in a busy shopping centre, dance with a local girl a Walzer (therefore he had to find a shop which played the cd for him), buy a fish at the fish market and sell it more expensive in order to get some "beer money",...

at like 9.30 pm we returned to the student hall and the past part was done - we made real "Müchner Weißwürste" - bought those at a German Metzgers place here in Hong Kong. Was propably the best food we have eaten in Hong Kong so far! :-)

Information Day @ PolyU

Today was an information day for PolyU outgoing students. So our job was to provied the PolyU students with information about our beautiful country and our university.

was quiet interesting because we met even more people all over the world.

Guess what drink producer offered free drinks at this event? right it was Red Bull - the Austrian energy drink company; was quiet funny to point out for the chinese where this drink is made.

mid autum festival - 18.09.2005

Today was a big holiday in HK - mid autum festival;

therfore we went to victoria park on HK island; this place was crowded with people;
we had dinner at cafe de coral and I had a really good steak - the price was only about 4 EUR for that!!!

after that we went shopping - I bought myself a digital camera - casio exilim Z750; seems quiet nice.

Saturday night!

Of course we had to go out. This time we went to lan kwai fong on Hong Kong Island. It´s the place for going out in HK. Drinks are quiet expensive in bars - like 5 - 7 EUR for a big (0,5l) beer in a bar. The good thing is that many bars are so crowded that you even can´t get in...so there are many people partying at the street and you just go to the 7eleven (supmermarket) and buy whatever you want for little money!

On the way to LKF we saw the famous Mozartstubn - it´s an Austrian Cuisine which serves Austrian food. Might be a good place for getting some "real" food once in a while! :-)

week 3 & trip to shenzhen

Past week was pretty busy in school. We started our first project in financial systems in China. Have to do a presentation and an assignment.

For our Shenzhen trip we needed a visa. We were searching around quiet a bit and finally we bought a mutliple entry visa for one year (750 HKD).
On Saturday Gisela, Karli (friends from FHS Kufstein) and the guys from Steyr (Clemens, Ewald & Niki) and myself visited Shenzhen.
Shenzhen is about 30 minutes away from HK - just over the border. This place is quiet different to Hong Kong. Prices are even cheaper over there and you can bargain a lot (at least half of the initial price you can get off). At the end of our short trip we were in a huge five floor high shopping mall just across the border in mainland where every second word was: diiiiviidiii or ciiiidddddiiii - the chinese tried to sell us dvd´s and cd´s for like 10 HKD per pice (~ about 1 EUR);
I bought myself 4 t - shirt one short trouser and three pair of socks for about 180 RMB (~ 18,5 EUR);
Very amazing was for us how the construction work is done in Shenzhen. There are dozens of wokers working in building a small shop but during lunch all of them take a nap, have never seen this before! :-)

Flooding in Tirol

Two days before I left Austria - especially the Tirol suffered from flooding. Basically no time was left for preparing for the big trip coz I was with the fire rescue for most of the time.

Hi everybody,

I arrived here in Hong Kong two weeks ago - 26. August 05;
I got used to the different way of life a little bit. still quiet different to our lifestyle in many ways.
BUT I really like it so far.
